Uptown Neighborhoods

Charlotte's Uptown neighborhoods are defined by ward system - First Ward, Second Ward, Third Ward, Fourth Ward
Charlotte began as a small trading village in the 1700s, but it had grown enough by the 1850s that city leaders split the city into four wards, each with its own elected representative.

The wards grew as the city spread outward, and the city added seven more as suburbs such as Dilworth and Myers Park were built. The ward system was abandoned in 1945, but uptown neighborhoods still are identified that way, with Trade and Tryon streets as the dividing lines.

Today inside Interstate 277, which circles uptown, the wards are thriving, with new single-family, townhouse and high-rise condo projects.

Charlotte's Streetcar Suburbs

Some of the most famous neighborhoods in Charlotte are the "streetcar suburbs" that form a ring around uptown. They were built to accommodate trolley commuting; many have front porches and traditional sidewalks that lead to eclectic shops and restaurants. All are within a few miles of the city's center.

Historic Neighborhoods

The Charlotte City Council has designated 5 neighborhoods near uptown as Historic Districts. Find details below - The neighborhood names are: Dilworth, Fourth Ward, Hermitage Court, Plaza Midwood and Wesley Heights.

If you buy a home in one and want to renovate, you'll need approval before making exterior changes. But there's a benefit too: State tax credits for certain renovations. Exterior changes that require approval include additions or new construction, fences and garages, new siding and windows. Older homes in Elizabeth, Myers Park, North Charlotte and the tiny Pharrsdale area of Eastover that include Scotland Avenue are also eligible for state tax credits for some renovations. for details contact John Rogers or Wanda Birmingham at the Historic District Commission (704) 336 2302. http://www.hpo.dcr.state.nc.us/ (click tax credits) and http://www.charlotteplanning.org/ (click historic districts)
